Spinner Dolphins

Spinner dolphins are the smaller variant of dolphin found in Mauritius. The adult spinner dolphin can grow to a size of up to 235 cm and can reach a body mass of up to 79kg. Spinner dolphins generally have tripartite colour patterns which would translate to the dorsal area being dark grey, the sides being light grey and the underside being pale grey or white. Spinner dolphins feed on small fish, squid, and shrimps and will dive to depths of up 300 m to feed.

Bottle Nosed Dolphins

Bottle Nosed Dolphins

Bottle-nosed dolphins are the larger variant of dolphin found in Mauritius. They weigh an average of 300kg and can grow to a length of up to 4 m. Their colour is usually dark grey on the back and light grey on the flanks. The diet of these dolphins is primarily made up of fish but they also feed on shrimp, squid, molluscs and cuttlefish.

Sperm Whales

Sperm whale

The sperm whale is found all over the world and seasonally migrates for feeding and breeding. Females and young males live together in groups, whilst mature males live solitary lives outside of the mating season. Females cooperate to protect their young and nurse them until they are of age to look after themselves. Females give birth every 4 to 20 years and care for their calves for more than a decade. A mature sperm whale has few natural predators, although calves and weak adults are susceptible to attacks from pods of orcas. Mature adults reach an average of 16 m in length however some specimens can reach up to 20 m. The sperm whales can dive to a depth of 2250 m to hunt for its prey, it is the second deepest diving mammal.

Humpback Whales

Humpback Whales

The humpback whale is a species of baleen whale. The adults can reach a length of up to 16 m and can weigh up to 30 metric tons. Found in seas all over the world, the whales will migrate up to 25, 000 km each year. They feed in polar waters, and migrate to tropical or subtropical waters to breed and give birth, fasting and living off their fat reserves. Their diet consists mostly or krill and small fish.
